How to Clear a Green Pool Fast: A Pro's Water Chemistry Guide

A green pool turns away amateur techs and makes pros money. The difference is method. Algae blooms follow predictable chemistry, and clearing one is a sequence — not a guessing game with a jug of shock. Here is the order professionals work in.

1. Test before you touch anything

Get a full panel: free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid (CYA), and phosphates if you can. The most common reason a pool stays green is high CYA "locking" your chlorine — if CYA is over 80–100 ppm, no amount of shock will hold. That tank needs a partial drain and refill, not more chemicals.

2. Balance pH and alkalinity first

Chlorine is dramatically more effective at the right pH. Bring pH down to about 7.2 before shocking — at high pH most of your chlorine is the weak, ineffective form. Adjust total alkalinity into the 80–120 ppm range to keep pH stable while you work.

3. Shock to breakpoint, not by guess

Calculate the dose against your CYA level, not the label. Light green needs roughly 2x normal shock; deep green or black-green needs 3x or more. Add it after sunset so UV doesn't burn it off, and run the pump continuously. Under-shocking is the #1 reason a pool turns back green in two days.

4. Brush, run, and filter

Brush the walls and floor — algae clings, and chlorine can't reach what's buried in a biofilm. Run the filter 24 hours a day until clear. As dead algae clouds the water, the cloudiness is progress, not failure. Backwash or clean the filter as pressure rises.

5. Clear the cloud and confirm

Once the water turns from green to cloudy blue-gray, a flocculant or clarifier speeds the final clear-up. Re-test and hold free chlorine at shock level until it stops dropping overnight — that zero overnight loss is how you know the algae is actually dead, not just hiding.

6. Prevent the callback
